Meaning Of Life

Humanity is spoiled. Generally speaking. The tragedy is that we don’t even realize that it’s still simple things that give us the greatest pleasure. Complexity pulls us away from those simple things. Why is it then that we purposefully complicate our lives? Not on a high horse here, I do it to myself all the time. This perpetual self-sabotage limits our freedom and we don’t even realize it.

We invent tasks for ourselves daily. And we hold ourselves to the standard we set as if most of it is life and death. I don’t understand why this is human nature. Is it how we have come so far? Is it this need for constant improvement, constant raising of the bar that is responsible for our status as the dominant species on this planet? It is genetically built into our psyche. It is a bad thing, and it is a good thing. But of course, we need that moderation, and I think that often we don’t afford it to ourselves. We need to make more ‘stop and smell the flowers’ moments. We are driven. Is that sense of drive a symptom of our ego?

Sorry for the philosophical post today, but I am struck by how we choose to spend our time. We spend it working to accumulate more stuff, to fill an imagined void. It doesn’t help us, and so we do it some more, never realizing that we are wasting our whole lives reaching for a goal that will never satisfy us.

I’m going to resolve to take more time, to slow down for a bit and digest things more deeply, to question why I am doing a thing, how important it truly is, and if it really should be occupying space inside my head. Or at least occupying as much space as it does.

I will do this right after I get home from work, wash the car, make dinner, do some laundry, and keep my tablet game going. 😉
