Color Outside The Lines

Color outside the lines. It’s just a metaphor. When dimwitted humans decide they want to take a shot at being unique, they forget that just because they decided to color outside the lines, it doesn’t mean the picture turned out any good. I’m a big proponent of self-expression, but it has become the norm, and everyone is getting on that train. To be unique anymore, you need to color inside the lines. No one does that anymore. It’s like getting tattoos.

Tattoos were once a hallmark for bikers, prisoners, or the bad boy that truly was rebellious. Look at them now. The girls from the valley decide its cute to get a full arm sleeve of iridescent butterflies in a field of baby’s breath. That form of rebellious self-expression just doesn’t hit quite as hard anymore. But don’t worry, I see it starting to come full circle, since bowties are starting to creep back in. The rebellion went from bowties to tattoos, back to bowties, but now it has perverted into a sleeveless buttoned-up shirt, bowtie, with full arm tattoos and an expensive wristwatch. What. The. Fuck?

That’s good. Be different. But be mindful of the fact that when you are trying so hard to be different, you’re just starting to look like everyone else. So, color outside the lines, sure, but it would probably be better if you just drew your own picture straight off. And when everyone starts drawing their own picture, fuck it, build a sculpture. You can never be ahead of that unique curve for very long. Keep innovating. Or just settle down and stop trying so hard. That would be unique.
